DORIS DILLON SCHOOL IN CAMBODIA
Mission Statement
The Doris Dillon School in Cambodia, Bret Harte’s sister school, is a middle school that was built in 2007-8 with funds raised by Bret Harte Middle School and the Almaden community. It is located in a rural village near Kep in the Kampot province. Currently, the school instructs over 240 boys and girls. The Bret Harte student charity group, Invisible Issues, which Jim DeLong founded and moderates, performs many of the fundraising activities to help the school. While the Cambodian government provides basic services to these schools, donations from the Bret Harte and Almaden community have allowed us to provide: • five computers and internet access via a Nokia cell phone! • a computer and English language teacher • a nurse who not only treats students but instructs in healthy practices • a library of over 400 Khmer and English-Khmer books • a water filter for each classroom (water-borne diseases are a leading cause of death) • scholarships for 17 middle school and 6 high school girls who would otherwise dropout because of their families’ dire poverty • on-site, bi-yearly dental clinics for all students and staff • a water collection system to provide a water source for village drinking water during the dry season We have been granted non-profit status as a 501(c)(3) charity named the Doris Dillon School in Cambodia (Federal tax id. 47-1509301). We have attached the IRS Determination Letter to verify this. Please note that 100% of all donations are used solely for the Doris Dillon School’s benefit.
