Mission Statement
Pastry Live fulfills a need that many have felt for a truly progressive pastry event in the United States. The differences between Pastry Live and other competitions are: Pastry Live is 1. organized by professional chefs who are passionate about promoting growth in the industry. These chefs are focused upon providing a forum that offers events to benefit students, competitors and sponsors, along with chefs. (Other events are owned or operated by a product company.) 2. Pastry Live coordinators create a level playing field by outfitting every competitor’s kitchen with the same equipment and small wares. In this way, each team has the same technical resources and can concentrate on demonstrating its skill and innovation. And, no team can gain advantage by out-spending the others on specialty equipment. 3. Pastry Live’s judging is designed to be transparent. Judges turn in score sheets at fixed times and have their final meeting in the competition area, not behind closed doors. 4. Pastry Live’s competitions distinguish between skills and artistry by awarding grand prizes for Best Chef Skills and Best Artistry. In this way, judges can reward outstanding chef skills while separately expressing appreciation of artistic merits, thereby encouraging risk taking and innovation by the competitors. Other award categories include: Competitor’s Choice: The competition chefs choose their own favorite. Audience/People’s Choice: The audience casts their individual votes. With three primary voting segments -- (judges, competitors and people’s choice)-- the results will highlight the mastery of a competitor who is able to win in more than one segment. Also, with more award categories, more contestants go home as authentic (rather than courtesy) winners, and the competing chefs’ businesses or employers will be able to promote accomplishments in the media that have proven value because they have been truly earned. 5. Pastry Live plans to film chef demonstrations. Sponsors will have access to the edited videos published on the web for after-event marketing (budget permitting). With multimedia documentation, a short three-day event can essentially stay alive for the full year until the next event.
