Mission Statement

Founded in 1996 as Making Books Sing, a family theater and education program of the Tony Award-winning Vineyard Theatre, New York City Children’s Theater (NYCCT) became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2001, dedicated to using theater to inspire children, foster literacy, and promote social-emotional learning. Since its inception, NYCCT has served over 500,000 children and adults across all five boroughs and the tri-state area through nationally recognized productions and educational programs. With over 125,000 subsidized tickets, we continue to expand arts accessibility, ensuring every child has the opportunity to engage with the transformative power of storytelling and theater. Our mission is rooted in literacy, enriched by active play, and driven by a commitment to accessibility, diversity, and trauma-informed practices, helping children build confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love for the arts.
